Challenge #10: In your own space, talk about one of your fandom firsts. This could be your first fandom, your first fandom friend, the first fanwork you created, the first fanwork you interacted with... The options are endless

Not my first actual fandom, but my first online interaction with other fans was on an Inuyasha oekaki board in the mid-2000s, where I showed up to a ship-focused board to draw endless Sango-and-Kirara gen for a few months.  People were very nice about it—Sango was half of the focal ship and other people drew some gen along with their shippy stuff, it wasn’t entirely off topic!—but present-day me wonders if there might have been a more RTMI board elsewhere that I just didn’t know existed back then.

Challenge #6: Share your favourite piece of original canon.

I'm just going to go with favourite piece of a given original canon - I don't think I have a consistent overall favourite?

The insert song "Ai no Senshi" was used twice in Sailor Moon (that I've seen so far - I'm not quite halfway through actually properly watching S, watching on and off with years in between seasons, and may well have a different fave part by the eventual end), differently but effectively both times.  This is more of a technical/how-it-was-done fave than anything else.

The first time is in R, as the background music to a battle, doing double duty to highlight Usagi's resolve to protect Chibiusa, where it's timed out so well as so feel like an official AMV.  I'm used to insert songs that are played in the background without much regard for the animation matching the song, and to cutaway music-video moments meant to highlight a song such as the "Ki ni Naru Aitsu" sequence in Cardcaptor Sakura, but this was the first time I saw a heavy plot sequence so matched to an insert song.  The animation of the scene especially toward the beginning is made to highlight the music - clips and cuts timed to significant beats.  I haven't seen this episode in a few years but it still stands out to me in how above-and-beyond the execution of everything was!

The second use is in S, a more conventional insert song (played as the background to a clip it isn't synced specifically up to), as Usagi accepts a ride from Haruka and Michiru toward a tower where Mamoru is being held captive, planning to sacrifice herself to save him, and trying to vaguely bring the situation up.  ... and then Haruka says something that triggers a memory for Usagi, and the song cuts out entirely for a few seconds as she processes a growing connection between those cool high school students and the ambiguous new senshi who have been showing up.  I just like when a series messes with the music (esp. special music like insert songs) a little bit in a way that highlights something non-standard happening: for another general example, a usual power-up song cutting out when a character gets slammed into a building instead of pulling off a triumphant attack after transforming.

I think the first instance would be impressive to me no matter what—I’m used to insert songs just kind of being there in the background as album adverts—but I appreciate the second version for the contrast it provides.  Both are good.
